More Than a Game

More Than A Game - Week 12: Carrolwood Day's Robert Davis

Just before kickoff, Carrollwood Day School senior running back Robert Davis let the lyrics of My Moment, by DJ Drama, 2 Chainz, Meek Mill & Jeremih, sink in to his head.

Up for grabs on the field was the chance to break an 11-year-old Hillsborough County career rushing record and help take his team to the class 2A playoffs.

"I wanted to listen to the song, because it was talking about my time to shine," Davis said. "It was my time to shine with the record."

And shine Davis did. The senior broke the record with ease during the first half of the game against Moore Haven. Despite playing with a broken hand. He totaled 232 yards, well beyond the 91 yards he needed to set the new mark.

As time ran out, Davis was handed the game ball while standing next to his father, assistant coach Derrick Brown. He clutched it and relished a moment that had been a long time coming. The chance to celebrate with family, friends and fans — the playoff victory over Moore Haven — meant more than the record.

Each week this fall, Times photographer Eve Edelheit will scan the county to focus on the ancillary aspects — players, drama, coaches, fans, highs, lows, tradition, cheerleaders — that make prep football in this area "More Than a Game."
