Carrollwood Day sophomore Robert Davis scored three touchdowns, including one a school-record 99-yard run, as the Patriots routed host Merritt Island Christian 38-3 in their football opener Saturday.
According to Patriots coach Lane McLaughlin, the game counted in the independent program's regular-season standings.
A Freedom transfer, Davis burst up the middle from inside his own 1, darted outside and outraced the MIC defenders. He also scored on a 95-yard kickoff return and a 9-yard run.
"His 95-yard return was really 150 yards because he went back to the left, back to the right, back to the left and back to the right," McLaughlin said. "… He's got some jets."
Quarterback Deuce Gruden, son of former Bucs coach Jon Gruden, was 6-for-8, including a 65-yard pass to Nate Lewis.
