Preseason football: Hillsborough County roundup

Lennard 57, St. Pete Catholic 0: Freshman Devin Black threw for four touchdowns, Diontae Johnson scored four including two on punt returns, and host Lennard put on quite a display. "I'm not gonna sugarcoat it. We're going to be pretty good," said Longhorns coach Keith Chattin, whose teams have gone 1-19 over his first two seasons. Running backs Josh Shelman and Jarren Bailey had two touchdowns each, and the defense was a force as well.

Carrollwood Day 26, Vero Beach St. Edwards's 0: Freshman quarterback Aaron Angelos hit Elias Earley with a touchdown on the game's first play and state-ranked CDS went on to an easy victory. Willie Parker added two touchdowns on the ground for the Patriots. St. Edward's reached the Class A playoffs last season.

Spoto 40, Newsome 34: Jesse Holmes' 5-yard touchdown catch with 18 seconds left completed a 92-yard drive in the game's final four minutes. Terrance Williams made the key play of the drive with his 40-yard catch on a jumpball down to the 5. The Spartans were without an active kicker, so down two points, had to go for the end zone. Spoto led early by nine, then trailed by as many as 11 points as Newsome got three first-half touchdowns from senior Bruce Anderson III.

Riverview 35, Leto 12: Dual-threat quarterback Keisean Young had a strong game, and the Sharks rolled up more than 200 yards rushing in the first half.

MINNEAPOLIS — While the Rays made some good defensive plays, threw a couple of big pitches when they needed to and got a few, and just a few, key hits, there were some obvious things they did wrong that led to them losing Saturday's game to the Twins 5-3:

Rays reliever Tommy Hunter says the Twins’ tiebreaking homer came on a pitch that was “close to where I wanted it.”
