ST. PETERSBURG — Lakewood and King are short on experience. In a defensive struggle that saw more than 150 yards in penalties, Lakewood's Teddy West returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown, and that was enough..
"That was a phenomenal return," Spartans coach Cory Moore said. "He's the fastest guy in the county."
Lakewood's defense forced a punt but West fumbled the return and the Lions recovered. Lions quarterback Greg Windham found Reese Sturgis for a 38-yard gain to set up a Zach Travis field goal and make the score 6-3.
Both teams mounted scoring chances but penalties kept them out of the end zone.
Lakewood was led by Byronton Jackson who ran for 81 yards.
"(Jackson) did a good job and we have got to run the football," Moore said. "Our defense had got to get that dog in it and get that mentality to grind it out."
