Preseason football: Newsome 34, Steinbrenner 34, tie

TAMPA — The game clock was the only thing to stop Newsome and Steinbrenner Friday night.

The teams tied 34-all after combining for 851 yards and 33 first downs. The preseason game was moved to Chamberlain from Steinbrenner because of unplayable field conditions.

Jon Marc Carrier scored four touchdowns for Steinbrenner, two receiving and two rushing. His diving 44-yard scoring reception from backup quarterback Quentin Poteralski with 3:14 remaining tied the score. Newsome's Ricardo Rodriguez blocked Michael Ruggles' extra-point attempt to preserve the tie.

Carrier caught five passes for 172 yards. His other scoring catch was a 38-yarder from Curtis Fitch. Newsome quarterback Will Worth rushed for 154 yards on 21 carries, and teammate John Hendricks had 85 yards on five carries, including TDs of 38 and 35 yards.

The Warriors and Wolves combined for 35 points in the first quarter, including touchdowns on three consecutive plays. After Hendricks' first scoring run, Steinbrenner's Jake Carroll and Aaron Wade of Newsome traded 90-yard kickoff returns for TDs.

Nick Ringo had a fumble recovery and interception for Steinbrenner.

  5. Meet Lawrance Toafili, Pinellas Park's not-so-secret weapon

Lawrance Toafili was a bit of a secret when the season started. The Pinellas Park High sophomore began last year on the junior varsity and was expected to stay there the entire season. But injuries to varsity players forced his promotion for the final five games.

“At first I was kind of nervous,” Toafili said of playing varsity. “But as I started to fit in more … I started to feel more confident.”
