PINELLAS PARK — Pinellas Park took the lead in the third quarter then put away Braden River 21-7 Friday in preseason action.
After Braden River scored on the second play from scrimmage in the second quarter, the Patriots used a variety of backs to sustain a second-quarter drive and tied the score on Oscee Calhoun's 20-yard run.
Pinellas Park moved the ball at will but struggled with turnovers. In the third quarter, backed up on their 1-yard line, trio of Calhoun, Pierre Johnson and Kal-El Williams grinded out tough yardage during a 99-yard drive. That ended with Nate DeMint's 4-yard run that put the Patriots up 14-7 in the fourth quarter.
The Patriots added another score as Alonzo McCray sprinted 15 yards for a 21-7 lead. A key play during the drive was a 50-yard run by Johnson.
"We played the game under tough circumstances due to a rain-soaked field and we also had five turnovers, and still won," Patriots coach Kenny Crawford said. "Our offensive line did a great job and we stuck to our game plan, which was to run the ball, and we did that efficiently.
"The defense played very well."
The Patriots open the season next week against Boca Ciega.
