ST. PETERSBURG — In a preseason contest that saw the varsity teams battle it out for three quarters before giving way to the JV squads, the host Green Devils rode a mix of touchdowns from veteran and younger players while its defense made big plays to keep the Vikings offense from scoring.
Key plays: With Northeast trying to punt from inside its own 5, St. Petersburg's defense blocked the attempt and recovered in the end zone to go up by nine. That play led to the Green Devils offense getting the ball in good field position after the free kick and adding a touchdown on a 15-yard run by senior Anthony Johnson to lead 16-0 at the half.
Key drive: On the opening drive of the third quarter, Northeast fumbled on a hand-off, and St. Petersburg recovered at the Vikings' 39. Six plays later, an 8-yard TD run by QB Jalynn Williams put the Green Devils up 22-0.
Play of the game: Green Devils sophomore Derrel Kelley opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 51-yard run for a TD.
Stars of the game: Williams showed his prowess as a runner, scoring on the ground and gaining 40 yards on two carries during a drive late in the third quarter. The game ended with a bang when JV player Aumhryaun Brown intercepted a Vikings pass and returned it 47 yards on the game's last play for a touchdown.
Stats of the game: St. Petersburg gained more than 170 yards rushing for the game, and went 4-of-4 passing for 45 yards during a second-quarter drive.
