TAMPA — Sickles won the game but may have lost starting quarterback John Melvin Hendrick for next week's Class 4A playoff game at Armwood.
Hendrick left the stadium at halftime with a left wrist injury after leading Sickles (8-2) to a 28-0 lead over Wharton (2-8). The extent of his injury was not immediately known. Hendrick had 98 yards and a TD before Scott O'Donoghue had to take over.
Sickles' offensive line, anchored by center Shane Cordileone, dominated as the Gryphons rushed for 282 yards and five touchdowns. Their scoring drives covered 67, 51, 85, 58, 73 and 63 yards. Hillsborough County's leading rusher, Cary White, raised his total to 1,523 yards with 77 yards and a TD. Brieann Dollard had 79 yards rushing with three TDs, and Chris Nahat caught seven passes for 109 yards and a TD.
