RIVERVIEW — Spoto went from 0-7 to a playoff team in two weeks, coming within two minutes of a second straight shutout victory in a homecoming win over Lennard.
"It's huge any time you win when you've lost a bunch of games," Spoto coach Dale Caparaso said. "It helped prepare us for games like this."
Lennard (1-9) put together three time-consuming drives, but Spoto came up with key stops. On two long drives, the Spartans (2-7) forced a change of possession by stopping fourth downs. On another, a fumble led to a Spoto touchdown.
A 71-yard Lennard drive ended when Ed Farredge recovered a fumble at Spoto's 19-yard line. James Bethea burst up the middle on a 61-yard run and two plays later Traverian Williams ran around left end for a 34-yard touchdown.
After stopping the Longhorns on fourth down, the Spartans scored on another three-play drive in the second quarter as quarterback Kevin Hobley found Marc McCoy in the left corner of the end zone on a 35-yard touchdown.
After stopping Lennard again on fourth down, Spoto took five plays to get another TD with Hobley completing a 54-yard scoring pass to Tavaris Johnson.
"We thought we were a little faster," Caparaso said of those big plays.
Lennard quarterback Diontae Johnson scrambled for an 18-yard TD late in the fourth quarter.
