Spring football: Springstead 31, Anclote 7

Springstead 31, Anclote 7

Spring game-breakers: Daniel Wright picked up right where he left off last season for the Springstead offense. After battering the Anclote defensive line in the first half, he broke off big runs in the second half, finishing with 29 carries, 133 yards and three TDs. …Anclote coach Matt Wicks started off Thursday's game in the wing-T offense. Whether it was due to Springstead's stellar defense or growing pains with the offensive personnel, the Sharks struggled. Springstead defensive tackle Zack Lawrence (fumble recovery) and middle linebacker Dylan McLeod (two tackles for loss) wreaked havoc in the backfield as the Eagles held Anclote to 35 yards rushing on 25 carries. Thirty-three of those yards were gained on two rushes. …Springstead quarterback Victor Koerick started under center, gaining his first varsity experience. The rising junior fumbled three times — losing two — and tossed an interception that Anclote cornerback Matt Elkins brought back 20 yards for the Sharks' only touchdown. Koerick settled down a bit in the second half, hitting Robert Holdway on a 14-yard screen pass. He also got into a rhythm with Wright. …Sharks quarterback Brandon Vinkler got more freedom in the second half and delivered 7-of-18 for 100 yards with two interceptions. He was saddled with four drops from his receivers, but the offense moved out of the spread attack.

Did you know? Anclote athlete Jonte Scott was a state runnerup in wrestling, and the rising senior is ready to make his mark on the gridiron as well. With the Sharks losing two 1,000-yard rushers in Willie Barrett (1,042 yards, 12 TDs) and Trent Crawford (1,016 yards, eight TDs), Scott is penciled in to receive a lot of touches. …Elkins, who played both ways, did not play organized football last season.

Audible 1: "I read today (Thursday) in the Times that they (Anclote) were planning on running the wing-T. I was a little scared because we never work wing-T. We ran some in the walk-through and the kids handled it well." — Springstead coach Mike Garofano

Audible 2: "We really need to get our (backups) better. It is tough when you have so many young kids making young mistakes. Hopefully, that will change over the summer." — Wicks
