Tampa Bay Tech 20, Wharton 0

TAMPA — The Tampa Bay Tech defense is going from a stingy bunch to downright mean.

The Titans held the Wildcats to 96 yards of offense — 50 coming on one play — as TBT clinched the Class 5A, District 7 title.

TBT will play East Lake in the first round of the playoffs, but first it faces Hillsborough to close out the regular season.

Against Wharton, the Titans allowed just one first down and 17 yards in the first half.

"That is a nasty bunch, a motley crew," TBT coach C.C. Culpepper said. "They continue to improve and were really making plays out there tonight."

Running back Maurice Hagans finished with 149 yards, but the Titans fumbled four times, losing two.

"They changed some stuff on us in the second half, and we were a little frustrated," Culpepper said. "We were making big-yardage plays but couldn't finish drives."
