FSU will retire Brooks' jersey

Former Florida State and Bucs star linebacker Derrick Brooks will have his Seminoles' No. 10 jersey retired by the school in a ceremony during its game against Clemson on Nov. 13.

"I'm excited about it and I'm looking forward to it,'' Brooks said Friday. "A lot of people did a lot of work to help me get these accomplishments.''

Brooks was a first-team All-American as a junior and senior (1993, when FSU won a national title, and 1994).

"It's hard to believe anyone could be more deserving than Derrick,'' said Mickey Andrews, FSU's retired defensive coordinator who recruited Brooks out of Pensacola. "This world would be a better world if it had more Derrick Brookses in it.''

Other retired FSU jerseys: Deion Sanders, CB (2); Chris Weinke, QB (16); Charlie Ward, QB (17); Fred Biletnikoff, WR (25); Warrick Dunn, RB (28); Ron Sellers, WR (34); Ron Simmons, NG (50).

College World Series: TCU, S. Carolina win

TCU 6, UCLA 2: Matt Purke and Tyler Lockwood held the Bruins (50-15) to four hits and the Horned Frogs (54-13) forced a second Bracket 1 title game today (2 p.m., ESPN2). The winner goes to the best-of-three final beginning Monday in Omaha, Neb., to face tonight's South Carolina vs. Clemson winner.

S. CAROLINA 5, CLEMSON 1: Michael Roth pitched a three-hitter in his first start in 14 months, and the Gamecocks (51-16) scored in five of the first six innings to beat the Tigers (45-24). South Carolina has staved off elimination in three straight games. The teams meet again tonight (7, ESPN) to determine the Bracket 2 winner. Roth has been a short reliever his entire career, logging more than three innings in only two of his previous 48 career appearances.

track: Former FSU standout Walter Dix won the 100-meter title at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Dix (10.04 seconds) won his first national outdoor title in the event. Florida senior Calvin Smith of Lutz was sixth overall in the 400-meter semifinals (45.68) to advance to today's final.

usc appeals: Southern California filed an appeal with the NCAA, asking that several sanctions against its football program be reduced because they are "too severe" and "inconsistent with precedent." USC wants a two-year postseason ban reduced to one year, and wants scholarship reductions in football from 2011 to 2013 to be reduced to five lost scholarships each season, not 10.
