German rips Argentina for attitude

ERASMIA, South Africa — Germany M Bastian Schweinsteiger accused Argentina, whom Germany faces Saturday, of showing no respect for opponents and referees.

Germany beat Argentina in penalty kicks four years ago in the quarterfinals. Afterward, the teams exchanged punches and kicks in a fracas that included team officials from both benches.

"The shootout is still in our memory, but what really weighs heavily on our minds is what happened after that match," Schweinsteiger said Wednesday. "We have to remain calm and not get provoked, and I hope the referee will be very alert.

"You could see their behavior at halftime of the game against Mexico. When you look at their body language and gesticulations — the way they try to influence the referees — they have no respect. It's their mentality and character, and we'll have to adjust."

Mexico and Argentina players had to be separated as they headed for the tunnel at halftime of their Round of 16 game. Mexico was furious over Argentina's first goal, which came with Carlos Tevez clearly offside.

Brazil: M Elano will sit out Friday with a bruised bone in his right ankle. Elano, who has two goals, has not played since sustaining the injury on a hard tackle in the second group game.

England: Charges against Pavlos Joseph, the fan who entered the locker room after a tie against Algeria, were dropped after he paid a $100 fine.

Mexico: Javier Aguirre resigned as coach. This marked the fifth consecutive World Cup Mexico has been eliminated in the Round of 16.

ST. PETERSBURG — Less proved to be more for RHP Jake Odorizzi during his last start when he pitched exclusively out of the stretch. The result was seven one-hit innings in the Rays' 3-2 win Monday at Oakland.

Rays starter Jake Odorizzi says that pitching from the stretch “limited the movements prior to throwing the pitch, and that changed a lot of things” in a superb outing last week.

Judging by those who were asking for them before Saturday's giveaways, those who tried to get an extra one or two once inside the Trop and those who quickly slipped theirs on before finding their seats, the DJ Kitty Onesie might be the Rays' most popular giveaway. Ever.
