SAN FRANCISCO — Former World Series star Sergio Romo is out as Giants closer after blowing a save for the third time in his past five chances, the team announced Sunday.
RHP Santiago Casilla and LHP Jeremy Affeldt likely will share closing duties for the time being, manager Bruce Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle.
Romo has 22 saves this season but has been in a tailspin for nearly the past two months. He has a 9.00 ERA and five blown saves in 16 appearances since May 9 and has a 5.17 ERA overall. Saturday night, he failed to protect a 1-0 lead over the Reds, walking Joey Votto to lead off the ninth then giving up a two-run home run to Brandon Phillips.
"I talked to Sergio" Sunday, Bochy told the Chronicle. "I think it's the right time we tweaked this a little. He's still going to be part of the mix, but we're going to back off a little bit and do it by committee."
Romo has 77 career saves. He got the final outs of the 2012 NL Division Series against the Reds and the World Series against the Tigers.
