girls Class A, district 8 Banner day: Pirates' title a first in girls golf
One thing is missing among the many banners that decorate Pasco's gymnasium.
The Pirates girls golf team had never won a championship and thus, no banner in the gym.
The goal of obtaining a banner this season became Pasco's focus, and it paid off Monday when the Pirates won the Class A, District 8 tournament at Shady Brook Golf Course in Sumterville.
Pasco earned the team low score with 456 points. Hernando was second with 517 followed by Nature Coast (537) and South Sumter (523).
The Pirates were led by Kellianne May, who shot a team-best 20-over-par 92. Also scoring for Pasco was Mary Kassabaum (110), Victoria Bryant (125) and Tori Norris (129).
"We had never played with any of these girls. We weren't sure how good the teams were," Bryant said. "We were super excited because the school had never won anything in girls golf."
Bishop McLaughlin sophomore Spencer Zaldestino shot 95 and finished fourth overall to earn an at-large bid.
At the Class 2A, District 11 tournament, Durant's Erika Wardzinski ignored her sprained ankle to help the Cougars to a second straight district title.
She overcame a four-bogey start at Heritage Isles Golf & Country Club in Tampa to finish 4-over 76 to capture the individual title. Cougars sophomore Madison Opfer, the defending district champ, finished two strokes back.
