State golf: Mitchell freshman in 2A contention

Mitchell freshman Nick Gabrelcik was in contention after the first round of the Class 2A state golf tournament in Howey-in-Hills. Gabrelcik shot 1-over 73 on the Mission Inn and Resort's El Campeon Course for sixth place Tuesday.

Tarpon Springs freshman Panormitis Karatzas was tied for ninth after shooting 76. Sunlake senior Travis Wells shot 80 and was tied for 19th. Middleburg junior Cody Carroll led the field after 5-under 67.

Jesuit was sixth in the team competition with a score of 339. The Tigers were led by Connor Murphy, who shot 81. Fellow sophomore Grayson Maddox shot an 83, while sophomore Max White (83) and senior Matt Zloto (89).

Mitchell was in ninth place with 346. Aside from Gabrelcik, senior Anthony Salvati shot 89.

Nature Coast was in 15th (399), 101 shots behind leader American Heritage.

In the girls competition, Osceola junior Madison Heideman was the top local after shooting 6-over 78 on the Las Colinas course. She was tied for ninth, six shots behind leaders Julia Towne of Eustis and Kendall Griffin of Sebring. Mitchell senior Estafania Guizar-Diaz was tied for 23rd after shooting 83.

In the team competition, King was 13th (405), Land O'Lakes 14th (409) and Nature Coast 15th (410). American Heritage was in the lead with a 323, one shot ahead of Fort Lauderdale Archbishop McCarthy.
