USF men's golf team falters in NCAA quarterfinals

At Bradenton, the greatest season in USF men's golf history ended Tuesday morning with a 4-1 match-play loss to Georgia in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships.

One of eight teams to advance through four rounds of stroke play, the Bulls struggled to build on that momentum Tuesday. Georgia led in all five matches early on before USF staged a modest rally. Lee McCoy's 5-and-3 triumph against Bulls senior Ryan Fricker sealed things.

Sophomore Rigel Fernandes provided USF's main highlight, winning five of seven holes against Greyson Sigg in one stretch and leading 1-up when Georgia clinched the match.

"I think over the last five, six weeks we've proved that we can play with anybody in the country. We just have to take that to next year," Fernandes said. "It was our goal this year to get here and make the eight, and we did it. The goal will be the same next year."
