Green Devils romp to titles

SEMINOLE — With a combined seven boys and girls players undefeated in singles competition, St. Petersburg had already put a lot of ground between itself and what passes for its competition in Class 4A, District 6.

So it was expected the Green Devils would have no problem winning both team titles at Tuesday's meet.

And in one of the day's most anticlimactic events, St. Petersburg did just that, as both its boys and girls teams rolled to their third straight team titles.

"There always can be some uncertainty in high school sports," Green Devils coach Todd St. Louis said. "You have to worry about illness or injuries. But everyone played well and did a great job."

Any thought of St. Petersburg sweeping every match was erased at No. 1 girls singles when Seminole freshman Julia Sikorski defeated Emily Dvorak, 6-0, 6-2. It was the second time this season Sikorski had topped Dvorak, the Times' county player of the year last season.

After that, St. Petersburg dominated, winning the remaining boys and girls singles and doubles matches.

The Green Devils' girls singles champions were: Agatha Ambrozy (No. 2), Sunshine Beba (No. 3), Courtney Howard (No. 4) and Tiffany Easton (No. 5). In doubles, Dvorak and Ambrozy teamed to win at No. 1, and Beba and Easton won at No. 2.

St. Petersburg swept every boys match with Ed Corty (No. 1), Philip Novikov (No. 2), Robert Perry (No. 3), Robert Dvorak (No. 4) and Danny Zakira (No. 5) each winning in singles. The Green Devils' doubles champions were Corty and Perry at No. 1 and Novikov and Dvorak at No. 2.

"We knew we had a pretty good shot to win, but we had to work hard at it," Corty said. "We just had to stay in the moment and not think about remaining unbeaten."

Palm Harbor University was the runnerup in both boys and girls.
