Hamilton wins as Alonso extends edge

MONZA, Italy — McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton won the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday, and Formula One leader Fernando Alonso of Ferrari finished third to extend his overall points lead.

Speculation about Hamilton making a switch to Mercedes dominated the weekend, but he put the focus back on driving with his first win at Monza and the 20th of his career.

"It's a fantastic win in front of the best crowd. … It's been the best day," said Hamilton, who moved past Sebastian Vettel for second in points, 37 behind Alonso.

NHRA: Tony Schumacher earned his record ninth Top Fuel victory in the U.S. Nationals with a run of 3.806 seconds at 315.34 mph at Clermont, Ind. He broke a tie with Don Garlits for the event Top Fuel victory leader. Schumacher shares the overall mark with former Pro Stock driver Bob Glidden. Mike Neff (Funny Car), Dave Connolly (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) won their respective divisions.

EAST BAY RACEWAY: Kyle Bronson won the Open Wheel Modified feature late Saturday in Gibsonton.
