Tampa Catholic’s Mike Gregory steps down

Tampa Catholic's Mike Gregory, who led the football program to a pair of state semifinal appearances, stepped down as coach to become an assistant at Lyon College in Batesville, Ark.

Gregory was 36-21 and won three district and two region titles.

The Crusaders moved quickly to find a replacement, hiring Jeris McIntyre, a former standout at the school.

McIntyre, who graduated from Tampa Catholic in 1999, was an assistant offensive coach at his alma mater for the past three years.

He played at Auburn and was a team captain in 2003. McIntyre was drafted by Kansas City as a wide receiver in 2004 and played three seasons in the NFL before finishing his professional career with the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe.

"We are grateful to Coach Gregory for his five years of service as our head coach and wish him all the best in his new venture at the collegiate level," Tampa Catholic principal Robert Lees said in a statement.  "We are blessed to have a strong and experienced coaching staff and to have someone of Coach McIntyre's expertise and stature as head coach. He is well prepared to lead the Tampa Catholic football program. We are so proud to have one of our own take the reins of the program and we are truly excited for this next chapter of Crusader football."
