The Lightning on Tuesday put goalie Marc Denis on waivers. If he is not claimed by noon today, he will be bought out of the final year of his contract.
In a buyout, Tampa Bay would be responsible for two-thirds of the $3-million Denis is owed on the last year of his deal. As it applies to the salary cap, the $2-million would be spread out over double the amount of years remaining, meaning $1-million will count next season and in 2009-10.
Denis, 30, a colossal bust after being acquired from the Blue Jackets in June 2006 in the Fredrik Modin deal, would become an unrestricted free agent.
BARBER RESIGNS: Bill Barber, who spent the past six seasons as the Lightning's director of player personnel, resigned, team spokesman Bill Wickett said. Barber, 56 next month, a Hall of Fame player for the Flyers and former Philadelphia coach, grew weary of the arduous travel associated with his job and wanted to spend more time with his family, Wickett said. Tampa Bay is expected to make a formal announcement today.
DUCKS OWNER SUSPENDED: The NHL indefinitely suspended Anaheim owner Henry Samueli after his guilty plea to a felony count of lying to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Commissioner Gary Bettman said the league will determine the length of the suspension after sentencing on Aug. 18. Samueli, 53, entered the guilty plea Monday. Prosecutors recommended five years' probation and a $12.2-million fine.
Maple Leafs: Forward Kyle Wellwood and goalie Andrew Raycroft were put on waivers.
