BRANDON — One second Vinny Lecavalier was on his feet, and the next he was facedown.

The Lightning superstar said he forgot to remove one of his skate guards before Thursday's first workout at the Ice Sports Forum. As he stepped on the ice, he went down — hard.

"I started talking to someone and forgot my left one," he said. "As I walked onto the ice, I was like, 'Oh, no.' "

A true athlete, Lecavalier kept a grip on his breakfast peach. "It didn't touch the ice," he said proudly.

Lecavalier met Wednesday with noted orthopedist James Andrews, who in April surgically repaired a torn labrum in Lecavalier's right shoulder. Lecavalier said Andrews is "happy" with his progress, though the center is not cleared for contact. Training camp begins Sept. 16.
