TAMPA — The story around the Lightning locker room Tuesday night was that Paul Ranger's shot toward an open net with about three seconds left in overtime was stopped by the head of a sprawling Panthers player.

As it turned out, the shot hit the glove of defenseman Keith Ballard.

That after Florida goaltender Tomas Vokoun stick-checked the puck from a hard-charging Vinny Prospal with six seconds remaining and Mark Recchi's last-second shot was deflected wide by a stick.

"It just sums up the way it's going right now," Prospal said.

The 4-3 shootout loss at the St. Pete Times Forum indeed was frustrating. It was new coach Rick Tocchet's second straight shootout loss and pushed the team's streak without a victory to 0-3-2.

But Tampa Bay (5-7-6) deserved better.

"There were so many good things," Tocchet said.

Such as a team-record 52 shots, including a season-best 21 in the second period, erasing a three-goal second-period deficit and scoring twice in the third with defenseman Steve Eminger sending the game to overtime with 2:51 left.

Eminger, acquired Oct. 21 off waivers from the Canucks, had a breakout effort with his second goal in as many games, two assists and a plus-3 rating.

Evgeny Artyukhin score his first goal early in the third to make the score 3-2 with an assist from Vinny Lecavalier, who created space behind the goal line by passing to himself off the base of the Panthers net, totally befuddling Florida defenseman Jay Bouwmeester.

Radim Vrbata began the comeback with 5:18 left in the second with his first goal to snap a 33-game streak without one dating to last season with the Coyotes.

Perhaps most encouraging, though, was rookie Steven Stamkos, who alternated at wing and center on a line with Lecavalier and Marty St. Louis, played a career-high 17:55 and whose nine shots were most by a Lightning player this season.

"Some guys don't get that in a month," Tocchet said.

"I felt like I was in the game," Stamkos said. "I had a ton of shots and felt great."

So did the team, he said.

"We dominated them tonight, outshot them and outplayed them in their end. When you're not winning, these games slip by you."

Three problems: a porous penalty kill, a strange ineptitude in shootouts and two goals by Panthers defenseman Bryan McCabe, who has three goals this season, all against the Lightning.

Florida entered with the league's second-worst power play but had two goals with the extra man. Tampa Bay has let in six of 21 chances in its past four games.

"We have to start boxing out a little better," Tocchet said. "The defense has to start taking sticks."

As for the 1-0 loss in the shootout, Lecavalier, Jussi Jokinen and St. Louis failed. Nathan Horton beat goalie Mike Smith to drop Tampa Bay to 1-4 in shootouts and 2-6 in overtime overall.

"It's probably our fault," Tocchet said. "We have not practiced penalty shots much this year. It's on my list, trust me, on the top."

But there was nothing to be done about Vokoun, who was spectacular with 49 saves.

"It seems like we just have a little bit of a cloud over our head," Tocchet said, "a couple of tough breaks against us."

And Ballard's head, er, glove, in the way.

Shoot outs are garbage, I don't think a team who was outplayed and outshot the entire game should be rewarded.
by Mike S. Nov 19, 2008 4:47 PM
Could only listen to the game, but it sounded like they again played with much vigor and intensity. Penalties are a problem as is the shootout problems. I'm pretty sure they'll work that out. One step at a time They're looking good when they lose now
by Herb Nov 19, 2008 4:43 PM
Billy, THANK YOU, I couln't agree with you more. Has anyone looked to see just how bad the Panthers are?? They beat the Bolts twice with 1 shutout. Most of the shots on net were in Vokoun's logo on his sweater.
by Mike Nov 19, 2008 4:40 PM
I'm sure you'll get a load of these comments, but Eminger came over from the Flyers in the trade for Carle, it was Pettinger who was taken off waivers...Eminger has a lot of potential and Downie is a thug but he is a hard worker too...
by Word Nov 19, 2008 4:40 PM
Another loss and another game not on TV. I don't know what bothers me more...
by Mark Nov 19, 2008 4:40 PM
as an fyi, the article mis-states that defenseman Eminger was claimed off waivers from the Canucks - actually that was Pettinger while Eminger was later acquired from the Flyers in the Matt Carle trade. Enjoy your Bolts coverage...
by Matt Nov 19, 2008 4:39 PM
To the below commenters - I don't know if you were at the game last night, but I have been to every home game this season and this was by far the best they have played collectively as a team. FL goalie was just playing out of his mind - 49 saves!
by Shane Nov 19, 2008 4:17 PM
apparently Billy was not at the game. One of the motions #4 went through last night to set up Arty's goal was world class. #91 also had nine shots on goal in an NHL game. Marty was flying all night. The effort was there. There is still work ahead.
by The Truth Nov 19, 2008 4:17 PM
Hey billy before you come here and start spilling your ignorance, you might want to at least know the rules. Stamkos isnt eligible to play in the AHL...but nice try
by DIZ Nov 19, 2008 4:16 PM
Eminger: trade from Philly for Carle. Pettinger: waivers from Vancouver. Get it right.
by danger Nov 19, 2008 4:01 PM
I want to be happy that we battled back from a 3-0 deficit, but we need wins. 6 OTL's translates into 6 points we missed out on. That's the difference between making into the playoffs or watching them on TV.
by The Truth Nov 19, 2008 3:50 PM
Billy, please do not spread incorrect information. Stamkos is not eligible to play in the AHL. Coming out of the CHL you must be at least 20 or spend at least 4 years in the CHL.
by Josh Nov 19, 2008 3:49 PM
Wow-Lightning fans are really stupid. How can you guys not come away encouraged from last night? Stamkos was awesome, Vrbata and Arty scored, Eminger had a breakout game, and V4 made a great play. Learn hockey before you say anything.
by Michael Nov 19, 2008 3:48 PM
Billy, Ray, and Ben, your being stupid. I already see a major improvement from them. Yes, they are losing, but under Melrose, they wernt trying. Under Tocchet, they are playing extreamly well, and the wins will come if they continue playing like this
by Spooky Nov 19, 2008 3:42 PM
Typo, you mean Pettinger was acquired off of waivers from Vancourver in 9th para. Steve Eminger came from the Matt Carle trade, I believe Nov. 6.
by Geografer Nov 19, 2008 3:35 PM
"Eminger, acquired Oct. 21 off waivers from the Canucks, had..." Um - Eminger was acquired in the trade of Carle from Philly. Pettinger was taken off waivers from Vancouver.
by Gene Nov 19, 2008 3:12 PM
Hey B.B.F., had one too many while you had someone transcribe your comments on the game? OK made the wrong choice bringing Barry here in the first place, but they corrected that. Now give Tocchet a month or two to get something established.
by ben bolt fan Nov 19, 2008 9:03 AM
This team continus to take pelenties, like there coashes, and they stinck on special teams. They canno kill them and they can not score on them. Thats 13 losses folks to only five wins. NO talent on this team.
by Ray Nov 19, 2008 9:01 AM
Doesn't matter what they say, a loss is a loss. And give up 2 PP goals (again) to the worse PP unit in the NHL and there's problems. And it's not good when your best players aren't putting the puck in the net in the shoot-out.
by Billy Nov 19, 2008 8:59 AM
A "stellar" effort? What kind of Kool-Aid is OK serving in the pressbox these days? There's four columns in the standings W/L/T/O...none for E. #91 looks like he would do great in the AHL. When are #4 & #26 going to stop going through the motions???
