Ex-Denver coach Gwozdecky to be Lightning assistant

Former University of Denver coach George Gwozdecky has agreed to be a Lightning assistant. An announcement is expected in the next several days.

The addition rounds out coach Jon Cooper's staff, which also includes assistants Rick Bowness and Steve Thomas.

Gwozdecky, 60, is an interesting hire. Cooper, entering his first full NHL season, has said he wanted another assistant with NHL experience. Even so, Gwozdecky's credentials are notable. Though fired in April after the Pioneers exited early the NCAA playoffs for the fifth time in six years, he won national titles there in 2004 and '05. Gwozdecky was 443-267-64 in 19 seasons.

Denver is the only Division I team with at least 20 wins the past 12 years.
