Lightning to pick No. 3 overall in NHL draft

The Lightning has the No. 3 overall pick in the June draft in Newark, N.J., and in Monday night's draft lottery did not move from its original position.

The Avalanche, originally slotted second, won the lottery and has the No. 1 pick. The Panthers slid from first to second.

"We're excited about that third pick," Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman said. "We think we're going to get a player with tremendous potential."

If it gets used.

Yzerman said he would consider trading the pick "if there's a scenario that makes sense. … I'm open to listening to anything."

It is an interesting position for Yzerman, who so covets high draft choices to build organizational depth. He even called trading the pick "unlikely."

"I don't have a scenario. I haven't discussed this with anybody," Yzerman said. "But, certainly, you consider all options."

His draft options include some very high-end talent.

Assuming Colorado takes defenseman Seth Jones, the consensus best player available, Yzerman will choose from a group including left wing Jonathan Drouin and center Nate McKinnon, both from Halifax of the junior Quebec league, center Aleksander Barkov from Tappara, Finland, and defenseman Darnell Nurse from Sault Ste. Marie of the junior Ontario league.

STAMKOS OKAY: An MRI exam on Steven Stamkos' left knee revealed "nothing of significance," Yzerman said, and the center will play for Canada at the world championship that begins Friday in Sweden and Finland.

Stamkos was hurt when checked by Filip Kuba with 1:10 left in Saturday's season-ending loss to Florida. Stamkos said the knee was slightly hyperextended.
