NEW YORK — Alex Galchenyuk tipped in a pass at the right post 1:12 into overtime, and the Canadiens overcame a late tying goal and beat the Rangers 3-2 in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference final Thursday night.

Montreal cut New York's series lead to 2-1 and can tie it Sunday night at Madison Square Garden before heading home for Game 5.

Galchenyuk, playing only his second game of these playoffs after returning from an injury Monday, deflected a feed from Tomas Plekanec to win it.

The Rangers tied it with 28.1 seconds left in regulation on Chris Kreider's goal.

Dustin Tokarski was sharp in his second career playoff game in place of injured goalie Carey Price, making 35 saves.

New York had its five-game winning streak snapped, and its run of six straight victories over the Canadiens also ended.

Halak signs with Isles

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — The Islanders agreed to a four-year contract with recently acquired goaltender Jaroslav Halak worth $18 million, espn.com reported.

Halak, 28, split his eighth season between the Blues and Capitals, compiling a 29-13-7 record. The native of Slovakia was acquired by the Islanders from the Capitals for a fourth-round draft pick and could have become a free agent.

Halak won the Jennings Trophy in 2011-12 for helping the Blues allow the fewest goals in the league. He has a 144-85-29 record with a 2.38 goals-against average, a .918 save percentage and 30 shutouts.

The Islanders also will retain their first-round selection in this year's draft by sending their top pick in 2015 to the Sabres to complete an October trade for forward Thomas Vanek, now with the Canadiens.

AROUND THE LEAGUE: Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta (shoulder) and forward Beau Bennett (wrist) had surgery and will be sidelined at least four months. … Jake Virtanen, the sixth-ranked prospect, will miss four to six months after shoulder surgery, tsn.com reported. Virtanen scored 45 goals for the minor league Calgary Hitmen.
