Holiday TV highlights

It's the most wonderful time of the year … especially if you're a sports fan with a comfy couch. Over the next 10 days there is an abundance of bowl games, NFL games, NHL games, college basketball games and NBA games. Here are highlights.

NBA Bulls at Knicks noon, ESPN This should be an entertaining start to the NBA's annual Christmas Day of games.
NBA Celtics at Magic 2:30 p.m., Ch. 28 This should be exciting as well.
NBA Heat at Lakers 5 p.m., Ch. 28 The NBA knows how to put the best games on Christmas Day …
NFL Cowboys at Cardinals 7:30 p.m., NFLN Unlike the NFL.
NBA Nuggets at Thunder 8 p.m., ESPN NBA junkies unite …
NBA Trail Blazers at Warriors 10:30 p.m., ESPN And keep uniting.
CBKB Diamond Head Classic final 9:30 p.m., ESPN2 College basketball from Hawaii.
NFL Jets at Bears 1 p.m., Ch. 10 Both teams need this game to improve playoff positions.
NFL Giants at Packers 4:15 p.m., Ch. 13 While the Bucs are on the radio only against Seattle, this game will be televised locally.
NHL Lightning at Thrashers 7 p.m., Sun Sports A Southeast Division tussle.
NFL Vikings at Eagles 8:15 p.m., Ch. 8 This game looked good at the start of the season. Not so much now.
CFB Little Caesars Bowl: FIU vs. Toledo 8:30 p.m., ESPN You have to love college football to watch this one.
CFB Independence Bowl: Georgia Tech vs. Air Force 5 p.m., ESPN2 Old-school football, with two option teams and suspect defenses.
NBA Magic at Nets 7 p.m., Sun Sports Another look at the Magic new guys.
NHL Wild at Blue Jackets 7:30 p.m., Versus You don't get to see these teams much. Usually for good reason.
NFL Saints at Falcons 8:30 p.m., ESPN An NFC South game between rivals.
CBKB Connecticut at Pittsburgh 8:30 p.m., ESPN2 A top-tier Big East game.
CFB Champs Sports Bowl: N.C. State vs. West Virginia 6:30 p.m., ESPN Not the bowl game either school wanted, so it should be interesting to see which one is more motivated.
NBA Magic at Cavaliers 7 p.m., FSN It's the third game in four days for the Magic, which can't be liking the schedule makers much.
CBKB Fairfield at Florida 7 p.m., ESPNU If the intensity is turned up a notch and everything goes right, Florida's got a chance.
NHL Bruins at Lightning 7:30 p.m., Versus Tampa Bay gets a national audience against a decent Boston team.
CBKB North Carolina at Rutgers 9 p.m., ESPN2 Tar Heels are trying to find themselves before ACC season begins.
CFB Insight Bowl: Iowa vs. Missouri 10 p.m., ESPN The Tigers may be the most underrated 10-win team in college football, and the Hawkeyes may be the most overrated seven-win team.
CFB Military Bowl: Maryland vs. East Carolina 2:30 p.m., ESPN This bowl just doesn't seem right without a military school in it.
CFB Texas Bowl: Illinois vs. Baylor 6 p.m., ESPN See, Military Bowl, this is how you do it. A Texas team is playing in a Texas bowl game.
CFB Alamo Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. Arizona 9:15 p.m., ESPN These teams are very good.
CFB Armed Forces Bowl: SMU vs. Army noon, ESPN Not to pick on you, Military Bowl, but … . And good for SMU getting back to relevance.
CFB Pinstripe Bowl: Kansas State vs. Syracuse 3:20 p.m., ESPN Being played at the college football mecca of Yankee Stadium (hence, the bowl's name).
CFB Music City Bowl: North Carolina vs. Tennessee 6:40 p.m., ESPN A battle between two teams that can't wait until next year.
NBA Knicks at Magic 7 p.m., TNT Going back to Dec. 20, this is Orlando's seventh game in 10 days.
CBKB Temple at Villanova 7 p.m., ESPN2 For the college basketball fans.
NHL Canadiens at Lightning 7:30, Sun Sports Lightning coach Guy Boucher takes on his former organization at home.
NBA Spurs at Mavericks 9:30 p.m., TNT Worth it just to see if Mark Cuban gets kicked out.
CFB Holiday Bowl: Nebraska vs. Washington 10 p.m., ESPN This could be the biggest blowout of the bowl season.
Dec. 31
CFB Meineke Car Care Bowl: USF vs. Clemson noon, ESPN The Bulls have had a surprisingly good season. Clemson has not.
CBKB Kentucky at Louisville noon, Ch. 10 Both teams are down a little, but it's a huge intrastate rivalry.
CFB Sun Bowl: Miami vs. Notre Dame 2 p.m., Ch. 10 This was a good game 20 years ago.
CFB Liberty Bowl: UCF vs. Georgia 3:30 p.m., ESPN The Knights have been exciting to watch, and former Plant quarterback Aaron Murray has looked good for the Bulldogs.
CBKB Florida at Xavier 4 p.m., ESPN2 The Gators play a dangerous nonconference game before SEC games begin.
CBKB Ohio State at Indiana 6 p.m., ESPN2 Indiana is looking to get back to relevance. Winning this game would be a big step toward it.
CBKB USF at Connecticut 6 p.m., ESPNU If the Bulls can find some scoring, they can beat the vulnerable Huskies.
CFB Chick-fil-A Bowl: FSU vs. South Carolina 7:30 p.m., ESPN If there's one team South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier would love to beat it's those stinkin' Seminoles.
NHL Coyotes at Blues 8:30 p.m., Versus Two West teams trying to stay in the playoff hunt.
Jan. 1
CFB TicketCity Bowl: Northwestern vs. Texas Tech noon, ESPNU This one's for the alums.
CFB Outback Bowl: Florida vs. Penn State 1 p.m., Ch. 28 Florida's Urban Meyer would love to end his UF career on a high note. Penn State is 3-0 in this bowl.
NHL Winter Classic: Capitals at Penguins 1 p.m., Ch. 8 Hockey the way it used to be, outside in the middle of a football field.
CFB Capital One Bowl: Michigan State vs. Alabama 1 p.m., ESPN The Spartans would love to cap a dream season with a win over once mighty Alabama.
CFB Gator Bowl: Michigan vs. Mississippi State 1:30 p.m., ESPN2 These teams could combine for more than 100 points.
CFB Rose Bowl: Wisconsin vs. TCU 5 p.m., ESPN TCU is supposed to have a dominant defense. We'll see against score-crazy Wisconsin.
CFB Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma vs. UConn 8:30 p.m., ESPN On paper, this game looks like a rout. But as they say, the game isn't played on paper.
Jan. 2
NFL Bucs at Saints 1 p.m., Ch. 13 Any way to get this game blacked out as well?
NFL Chargers at Broncos 4 p.m., Ch. 10 Tim Tebow continues auditioning for Denver's 2011 starting QB job.
CBKB Miami at Duke 7:30 p.m., Sun Sports Some ACC basketball to provide variety from the NFL games.

  2. It's not a game, but the names are all the same in this football family


    TAMPA — A coach yells across the field into a scrum of blue-and-white clad football bodies at Jefferson High: "Kim Mitchell! Kim Mitchell, come here!"

    These twins are not only identical, but they have almost identical names. Kim Mitchell III, left, and Kim Mitchell IV are  talented football players at Jefferson High with Division I-A college offers.
