Sunday Morning Quarterback, Week 11

Player of the Week | Tyler Hunter, Bloomingdale

The Bulls needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Hunter delivered. In a 42-35 win over Robinson, Hunter threw for 381 yards and five touchdowns. His main target was Terrel Ferrell, who caught touchdown passes of 47, 30 and 18 yards. Not only did Hunter throw it all over the field, he also converted a fourth-and-1 run in the final two minutes that sealed the win. Bloomingdale finished the regular season 7-3 and has won three straight.

Team of the Week | Jesuit

This was supposed to be the year the streak ended. The Tigers have beaten rival Tampa Catholic 17 straight times, but things were not looking good this season. Star running back and four-year starter Malik Davis graduated. They start a freshman quarterback. Hurricane Irma forced the Jefferson game to be moved to the Monday before the Tampa Catholic game. That turned out to be a one-point overtime loss. Jesuit had only one full practice before Friday. And Tampa Catholic was on a six-game win streak and hadn’t allowed a touchdown in four games. None of that mattered. The Tigers scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second half and won 35-7. The streak is now 18 games.

Coach of the Week | Andy Schmitz, Mitchell

Since taking over the program from his father in 2014, Andy Schmitz has built the Mustangs into a consistent playoff contender. Mitchell has won three straight district titles and secured four straight postseason appearances under the younger Schmitz. He also led Mitchell to its first playoff win last season. Friday marked another watershed moment for the fourth-year coach. The Mustangs beat Tarpon Springs 46-14 to cap off the school’s first undefeated season — and the first from a program on the west side of Pasco County. "I’ve been around when we have been close to going undefeated and we have not been close. I’ve been through the ups and the downs here and this team is pretty special," Schmitz said.

Five things you may have missed

River Ridge beat Sunlake: In 2007 the Royal Knights opened the season with a 50-0 win over Sunlake. That was the first year the Seahawks played varsity football. It was River Ridge’s only win of the season. It was also the last time they beat Sunlake until Friday night. River Ridge lost nine straight to the Seahawks until a convincing 36-0 win this season.

Seminole snaps losing streak to Osceola: The Warhawks ended a six-game losing streak to their neighborhood rival with a 33-7 win. Seminole ends the season by winning three of their last five games. That may not sound like much, but it’s the most wins in a season since 2014, when the Warhawks also won three games.

Zephyrhills Christian gets a big win: The Warriors beat Admiral Farragut 28-7, a win that likely will give them a high enough average in points to clinch the school’s first playoff appearance. Alonzo Sampson topped 1,000 yards rushing and 100 tackles for the season.

East Lake is rolling: Since forfeiting three games (two wins) and dropping to 1-5, the Eagles have been one of the best teams in the area. They finished the season by winning four straight, the last a 40-21 win over Clearwater on Friday. During East Lake’s win streak it outscored opponents by a combined 147-39.

Alonso is improving: After starting 1-4, first-year coach Reggie Crume guided the Ravens to victories in four of their last five games to finish 5-5. It is Alonso’s best record since 2013. A big reason for the turnaround is the play of the offense, which averaged 38.6 points the second half of the season.

Programming note

Today the Florida High School Athletic Association will announce the playoff brackets in each classification during a show that will be streamed live at 11 a.m. on NFHSNetwork.com. The brackets will be posted afterward on fhsaa.org.
