TORONTO — The Maple Leafs' Mike Babcock made the first coach's challenge in NHL history and was successful in overturning a goal by the Canadiens, but Montreal still came out on top 3-1 in the league's season opener Wednesday.
Babcock challenged Jeff Petry's apparent goal in the second period, arguing that Tomas Plekanec interfered with goalie Jonathan Bernier. Referees Frederik L'Ecuyer and Dan O'Rourke looked at the replay by the penalty box at Air Canada Centre and determined Plekanec made incidental contact with Bernier.
Alex Galchenyuk broke a 1-1 tie at 12:02 of the third for Montreal, and Max Pacioretty scored his second of the game into an empty net in the last minute.
Game highlights: The Rangers' Oscar Lindberg scored 1:35 into the game and Henrik Lundqvist made 32 saves as New York spoiled the host Blackhawks' Stanley Cup banner raising with a 3-2 win.
Torres won't appeal ban: Sharks forward Raffi Torres will not appeal his 41-game suspension for an illegal check to the head of and interference on the Ducks' Jakob Silfverberg in a preseason game Saturday.
Kings: The team and former forward Mike Richards are trying to work out a settlement after the club terminated Richards' contract in June, reports said. The contract was voided after Richards was detained and questioned at the U.S.-Canada border June 17. He was charged Aug. 25 with possession of a controlled substance.
