Marlins plan overhaul

ATLANTA — Dan Jennings will almost certainly not return as Marlins manager next season and may not be back in any capacity, part of what are expected to be sweeping changes in the team's baseball operations, the Miami Herald reported.

Relations between Jennings and owner Jeffrey Loria have grown strained since Jennings stepped aside as general manager in May to take over on the field from the fired Mike Redmond, according to the Herald. The newspaper said Jennings could return to the front office, but likely not as GM.

Some members of the player development and scouting staffs have already been let go or reassigned, the Herald reported. Internal meetings are scheduled this week, when further decisions are expected to be made.

The Marlins went into the season with high expectations but are well out of contention at 55-79. Their farm system is considered among baseball's weakest.

In other Marlins news, RF Giancarlo Stanton said his broken left hand was not 100 percent after he played in his first rehab game Tuesday. Stanton, who has been out since June 26, was targeting a Friday return.

ASTROS: RHP Scott Feldman was scheduled for an MRI exam on his sore right shoulder a day after being pulled in the third inning.

A'S: RH reliever Evan Scriber has a torn right lat muscle and will miss the final month of the season.

CARDINALS: LF Matt Holliday, out since July 29 with a right quadriceps strain, felt good a day after taking live batting practice, but there's still no timetable for his return. … RHP Michael Wacha's start was skipped to limit his workload. Wacha, 23, has pitched a career-high 1571/3 innings.

CUBS: Rookie C/OF Kyle Schwarber was scratched with right rib soreness and is scheduled to have precautionary tests.

NATIONALS: RHP Stephen Strasburg won't make his next scheduled start Friday after leaving Tuesday's game after four innings with upper back tightness.

PHILLIES: Rookie 3B Maikel Franco, who hasn't played since Aug. 11 because of a fractured left wrist, felt soreness in the wrist while trying to take batting practice.
