PLAYER STIPEND is ON TABLE
NCAA president Mark Emmert said Monday that providing a stipend to student-athletes seems less threatening to the schools that earlier knocked down a proposal to increase the value of a scholarship to cover the full cost of attendance.

Rays sign two
The Rays signed OF Justin Christian and C Eddy Rodriguez to minor-league deals with invites to spring training. Christian, 33, has big-league time with the Yankees (2008) and Giants (2011-12) and spent 2013 with St. Louis' Triple-A team, hitting .270. Rodriguez, a 28-year-old Cuban native and Miami product, played briefly for the Padres in 2012 and split 2013 between Double and Triple A.
DELMON TO O'S: Former Rays OF/DH Delmon Young agreed to a minor-league contract with the Orioles with an invite to spring training. Young, traded by Tampa Bay after his rookie year in 2007, returned last season and appeared in 23 games.
PLAYER ARRESTED: Wladimir Balentien, who hit a Japan League-record 60 homers last season, was arrested in Miami on domestic violence charges.
BLUE JAYS: Longtime player, coach and minor-league manager Omar Malave will manage Class A Dunedin this season.
