League director of officiating Stephen Walkom sent a memo Wednesday to on-ice officials instructing them to start calling delay of game penalties on players who ignore warnings to conform to the now-enforced uniform standards, Canada's TSN TV network reported Thursday.
The Hurricanes' Alex Semin became the first player penalized for having his sweater tucked into his pants, in the first period of a preseason game against the Blue Jackets on Wednesday night.
"(Semin) wasn't doing it on purpose," Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller said after the game. "First time wearing the jerseys and (it) kind of just kept popping up. But they said they'd be strict on it, and we're aware of it. We've just got to find a way to prevent it from happening."
The uniform rules have been on the books since 1964 but rarely have been enforced, the league says. The new emphasis on enforcing them gained traction at March's general managers meetings, TSN said. Safety concerns are the main reason.
Penalties also may be called on players who don't have their hockey pants properly zippered or who play with their sleeves rolled to their elbow pads. Players first will be warned and then penalized if they intentionally ignore the warning.
