What's hot: The fall migration of king mackerel is in full swing. Look for the smaller kings roaming near wrecks and reefs inside 60 feet of water. The larger fish will be on the beach or even inside Tampa Bay.
Tactics: There are many ways to catch kings. The old standby is trolling spoons and planers. Use the boat's speed to present the bait. The planer will get the lure to your desired depth. Another tactic is live baits and slow-trolling; it will usually produce the larger fish. Rigs should consist of a length of wire, a 2/0-4/0 nose hook and a small treble hook in tow. This rig is a must because of kings' speed and vicious feeding habits.
Tackle: A high-speed reel is a must. It should hold a minimum 300 yards of 20-pound line; larger kings have been known to run 200-300 yards in seconds. Rods should be at least 8 feet and have a limber tip for best bait presentation.
