What's hot: Anyone with a boat, kayak or even a good spot on a pier can get in on the hot kingfish bite. The Old Salt King of the Beach tournament is coming up this weekend, so everyone targeting big kings is doing their homework, prefishing and trying to find the right baits. The old standby locations are producing fish. Clearwater hard bottom, Redington and the Blind Pass drop are spots that have always produced, but not for everyone. The main reason: Not everyone is using the right baits. Kings on the beach are dining on bluefish, Spanish mackerel and threadfin herring, so trolling a spread of the biggest blue runners may not even get a second look.

Tips: Have you ever noticed that when you're fishing for kings offshore, the biggest fish usually eat first, or at least second? This is often the case because each school of these fish has a pecking order that is followed. This is also displayed in other pelagic species such as wahoo and tuna. So when you get on your spot this weekend, be sure to deploy some of your best baits first.
