Captain's Corner: Anglers vs. heat

The weather is extremely hot, and trying to beat the heat can be more important than getting a bite. Drink at least a gallon of water a day while angling. Bottom fishing remains average. Some days we can limit out. Others, we are working hard to fill the fish box. We've landed some nice red groupers, decent gag groupers and numerous mangrove snapper. The past two weeks, production in deep water has been decent. Fish have been more cooperative the past few days. No matter the spot, you'll have to work to bring home grouper. Since it has been so spotty, we move around a lot, fishing many depths and areas the past two months. With surface action, we've been throwing pelagic lines out while bottom fishing. There seems to be a good amount of kingfish around many of the areas holding Spanish sardines.
