Captain's Corner

Captains corner: Backcountry spots host snook hungry for live baits

What's hot: In backwater areas, creeks, canals and rivers, snook are blasting live offerings with vigor. The recent warm air temperatures have kept the fish more active than normal, so the bite should be solid until it gets cold again.

Tip: Always bring adequate outerwear on trips. The water temperatures are still quite chilly, so scooting quickly across the water can induce a chill. It's better to have warm gear aboard, just in case.

Seasonal: A "hook-out" device is a handy tool for fishermen. Hook removal can be dangerous for the angler as well as the fish. Dehooking devices can be purchased for around $10 and make a great gift.
