Captain's Corner: Bad weather sends divers scrambling

Where are the divers? The many storms of winter have left bad visibility offshore. Many divers have had to go out to more than 100 feet of water just to find only 10-12 feet of visibility. Many are taking this down time to prepare for the opening of grouper season on April 1 by doing regulator and cylinder maintenance.

Scuba Olympics: The Florida Scuba Olympics is March 27 at the Long Center pool in Clearwater. All proceeds go to the Special Olympics swim program. Events include an underwater bicycle race and an underwater balloon weight lift. To find a dive shop and team that is part of the program, go to padofl.com.

Shows: The Tampa Bay Boat Show at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg is Saturday and Sunday. The Tampa Bay Spearfishing Club Winter Invitational is April 9-11. Go to tampabayspearfishingclub.org for more information.

Bill Hardman teaches scuba, spearfishing and free diving through Aquatic Obsessions Scuba in St. Petersburg and can be reached at CaptianBillHardman@gmail.com or (727) 344-3483.
