What's hot: Before the cold front, Spanish mackerel were striking any trolled spoon or free-lined live white bait or shrimp presented within 100 yards of shore. Most of the inshore mitigation reefs that stretch from Sand Key south to Indian Shores were home to large Spanish mackerel, some bluefish and an occasional kingfish.
What else: Barracuda were almost a sure thing on nearshore and midwater reefs and wrecks. Slow trolling blue runners was effective, but it was difficult to find the bait. Gold spoons and plugs produced strikes.
