Captain's Corner: Better weather

Published May 5, 2015

A developing low pressure system in the Bahamas has caused blustery conditions the past few days, keeping most anglers in port. Drastic weather and barometric changes can completely change the fish activity and patterns. Either good or bad, it complicates the equation.

This season, snook have been the most cooperative since before the drastic freezes a few years ago. The conservation efforts by agencies and anglers seem to have worked. This has been one of the best snook bites in recent memory.

Mackerel were active but the stirred-up water in Tampa Bay has moved them back offshore. The beautiful weather last weekend was the last bit of our incredibly short spring. It seems we jumped right into summer. But, water temperatures backed off a bit, so perhaps the kings and Spanish mackerel will stay around a bit longer.

Hooks with a long shank or single strand thin wire will help combat the "biteoffs" common while mackerel fishing. Extra hooks are always a must when targeting macks. Now is the best time of the year to catch a bunch of fish in Tampa Bay. The weather is spectacular.

Something to consider: Afternoon sea breezes can really puff this time of year. If you're in a small craft, head home quickly to avoid a rough ride home. Conditions can change quickly no matter the time of year.
