Captain's Corner: Cool off under bridges

What's hot: With the summer air temperature still in the low 90s during the day, you might want to fish during mornings or evenings. But if you have to fish during the day, look under bridges. With the water temperature still about 83 degrees in the morning, the top-water bite has been great on the flats with some nice gator trout, redfish and even a few snook.

Tactics: As the sun gets higher, start heading to the Skyway or Gandy bridges, anchor in the shade and start fishing the pilings or rock piles under them. I fish for mangrove snapper, sheepshead and pompano. In the late evenings, I fish the mangrove shoreline with jerk baits and suspended baits.
