Captain's Corner: Cooler for kings

This wave of cold air is going to drive water temperatures that have been teetering on the 80-degree mark into the 70s, which are prime conditions for catching kings. The bait situation seems to be strong everywhere. We recently found a large school of Spanish sardines at 40 feet on a sand dune and filled the live wells. Hungry kings weren't far behind. Every sardine that hit the surface was devoured within seconds by kings up to 30 pounds. At one point we had five hooked up at the same time. Keep the action going by throwing handfuls of large pilchards behind the boat as a free offering, since live bait chumming is the most productive way to get a feeding frenzy in full swing.
