What's hot: Spearfishing action has been hot when the winds have subsided long enough for divers to get offshore. The bottom temperatures have been around 72 degrees. Cooler temperatures have brought fish to wrecks and ledges in the gulf, including hogfish, which have been feisty as they swim up and down the ledges. Red grouper are also showing up in 60 feet and deeper. The deeper the water, the bigger they will be.
More hot: Cobia are heavy in the gulf, and large amberjack are moving into shallower areas. Bigger amberjack have been in 140 feet and deeper for most of the summer. But some larger ones now are being speared in about 100 feet. Cobia have been seen and speared over wrecks and artificial structures in 30-100 feet.
