Captain's Corner: Cooler water temperatures bunch up trout

What's hot: The change in temperature this week has chilled inshore waters again. Colder temperatures will bunch trout into deeper potholes. Once you have found the right depth they will be stacked up, waiting for dinner to come to them. If you are catching small trout in an area, move until you find the size you are after.

Techniques: Smaller body-sized soft plastics no larger than 3 inches in darker or red colors will be more productive.

Tips: Slow your retrieve in cold weather; use smaller baits and wait until the grass flats have sufficient depths to keep the fish warm. Darker bottom grass flats and deep water residential canals will warm faster than open-fast moving waters.
