Captain's Corner

Captains corner: Cut baits outproduce live bait for redfish

What's hot: Redfish are swarming the flats in schools. Multiple catches of slot-sized reds (18 to 27 inches) have been reported from upper Tampa Bay to Ruskin. The limit is one per person per day.

Tip: Cut bait fished on the bottom proved best during our last few outings. We tore our baits in half and added a small split shot to weigh it down. The smelly offerings outproduced live bait swimming in the same area. It wasn't even close.

Strategy: Pick a day with a big high tide and look for large groups of mullet. It is almost a guarantee that the reds will be meandering right there with the mullet. Stay quiet in the boat. Plain and simple, a quiet boat will catch more fish on the flats than the noisy or clumsy angler.
