Captain's Corner: Don't be discouraged by February's slow bite

In February, we typically take what the ocean gives. Recently the bite has been on the slow side for the big three (snook, trout, redfish) inshore species. But this is a great time to take the kids and enjoy the action of lady fish and jack crevelle. They are all over the place. Blacktip sharks have been scavaging for whatever they can find. In between the ladyfish and jacks we have also been catching keeper trout and occasional pompano. It's time to inspect the trailer for wear, grease up the hubs and get all the lights working. Replace old pumps and grab a spare for a quick change if needed. Also be sure your bilge pump is in working order and check all wire connections on the pumps for corrosion.
