Captain's Corner: Florida's spiny lobster season ends March 31

What's out: Spiny lobster season ends March 31, and fortunately, you don't need good visibility to find them (just low ledges and good luck). Big lobsters are more frequently found north of Stuart on the east coast, or from the middle Keys and westward.

What's in: Grouper season returns April 1 with a welcome change to better weather. A break in strong cold fronts means better visibility is only a couple of weeks away.

Events: The FSDA Freediving Spearfishing Championship is April 16 in Bayport. Check divefsda.com for details. … The only spearfishing tournament in southwest Florida is the second annual Southwest Florida Open, April 30 through May 2 in Fort Myers Beach. Competing divers can shoot in their home waters on Saturday and drive their catch to the weigh-in on Sunday. See swflspearfishing.com for more information.

Chad Carney teaches scuba, freediving and spearfishing in the Tampa Bay area. Visit his Web site at floridaskindiver.com or call 727-423-7775.
