Captain's Corner: Get ready for kingfish run

Break out those stinger rigs now since our spring run of kingfish can turn on like a light switch. Just before last weekend's blow dirtied the nearshore gulf waters, several kings were landed from the Redington Long Pier. A 40-plus-pounder was caught at the north Skyway pier. Until now, only sporadic catches by boaters have been reported. That can change overnight. For years, Easter is when I change from bottom fishing to slow trolling. Some of our most memorable Easter trips have included the Clearwater hard bottom, the Blind Pass drop and the "parking lot" in 30 feet west of Pass-a-Grille. As the bait gangs back up, kings will surely follow. Lots of bait at the gulf pier on Fort De Soto. Despite muddy conditions, there were good amounts of bait at the Skyway piers on Tuesday.
