Captain's Corner: Get ready for Southern Kingfish Association tournaments

Looking ahead: The Southern Kingfish Association kicks off its tournament trail next weekend. Marco Island and Naples host events, and then it's on to Fort Myers. In just more than a month, it's our turn. Our area has two sanctioned events. The first is April 9-10 out of Sarasota, then we wrap up May 7-8 at Gators on John's Pass in Treasure Island. The events are family oriented and open to the public. Check fishska.com for details.

Status reports: At the Sunshine Skyway bridge fishing pier Tuesday, pier operators reported decent catches of silver trout and a few caught-and-released grouper in recent days. Schools of greenbacks and whitebait that often congregate along these structures were noticeably absent. On a recent relatively calm day, a trip just off the beach along Redington produced 50 silver trout and a mess of whiting while working tandem rigged jigs in 14 to 17 feet.

Jay Mastry charters Jaybird out of St. Petersburg and can be reached at (727) 321-2142.

BRADENTON — In a perfect world, Matt Duffy would have been in New York on Monday with his Rays teammates enjoying the final off day of the year. Instead, he was on Field 4 at Pirate City on a sweltering afternoon, trying to restart his season.
