Kingfish: Water temperature dictates when the first large migration of these giant mackerel arrive in our area. Reports of a few catches have trickled in, but the water is still a bit too cold. We've been catching a few Spanish mackerel. This is a sign the bigger mackerel are on the way and should be here soon.
Bait: Large threadfin herring have been seen a few miles from shore all last week. The schools seem to be idling toward shore at a slow pace.
Bottom fishing: We released 30-plus giant gag groupers while trying to catch other species for dinner in shallower depths of 40 feet. Key West grunts have been plentiful.
