Captain's Corner: Head to flats for redfish

Rob Gorta

What's hot: Redfish have invaded the flats around Pinellas Point. On a low tide in the morning, I look on an outer sandbar. Once the water rises, the fish will move onto the flat. I follow them until they settle closer to shore with the higher tide.

Bait: I start early in the morning with a 12-foot cast. I pick the brightest light on a bridge and throw on the down current. Scaled sardines, threadfins, pinfish and Spanish sardines have been caught in the net.

Tactics: I use a 2/0 circle hook. Redfish have thick skin around the mouth. This lets the hook grab the corner once the line tightens. Don't set the hook. Let the fish pull tight, and start to reel.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — For the second week in a row, Florida found itself storming the field in a game that came down to the last second. RHP Jake Odorizzi admitted he probably should have gone on the DL sooner than late July for the back stiffness that was keeping him from throwing the ball where he wanted to. He has since found an impressive groove, with another strong outing Saturday.

RB Cam Akers still looks like a former high school quarterback at times. His first two touches (30 yards) were special, but the freshman juked instead of powering ahead on his third (an unsuccessful third-and-1 rush). That's why the Seminoles are easing him in, as they did with Dalvin Cook three years ago.

Running back Cam Akers carries for a first down during the third quarter as FSU eases the freshman into the college game.
